Do It Yourself Maleficent Costume

To transform into Disney's iconic Sleeping Beauty villain, you don't need to be a DIY professional. Recreate your own modern version with just the following essential elements.

Gown

Whether it's a wrap-style dress, cap sleeve dress, sexy backless dress, or deep v-neck drape dress, you can easily make dreams come to life by opting for any long, black ensemble that is to your liking. Though this is very simple, it is imperative because it's the base of your groundwork from here on out. You want something that's comfortable and classy, yet something that very closely resembles yours (and the Mistress of All Evil's) bold style.

Then, you'll want to get either a simple, black cape or a leather jacket. To ensure that you look flawlessly elegant yet completely powerful, don't forget the signature collar, which can be easily made at home.

Collar Materials

• Black shelf liner
• Black duct tape
• DYMO aluminum adhesive tape

Collar Instructions

1. First, measure the space from the bottom of one side of the neck or the clavicle out to the very end point of the shoulder on that same side. Cut four triangles out of the black shelf liner to correspond with those particular measurements: the base of the triangle being the clavicle and the point being the shoulder.
2. On one side of every triangle, tape the duct tape horizontally across until the side is covered.
3. Attach the double-sided adhesive tape along the border on one side of every triangle, opposite the side covered with duct tape. Each of the four triangles should have adhesive tape on one side and duct tape on the other.
4. Taking two triangles, attach them by pressing the sides with adhesive tape together. Do the same with the other two triangles. You should then have two lightweight yet sturdy tringles.
5. Then using your glue gun, simply glue the base of each triangle to the inside neckline of the dress, so the pointed side is plunging outwards.

Horn Headband

Follow the simple step-by-step guide that only requires five supplies, some of which you may already have on hand.

Materials

• Thick black headband
• Thick bendable wire
• Black duct tape
• Black crepe paper
• Glue gun

Instructions

1. Begin by cutting two pieces of wire the desired length of your horns. Six inches will suffice unless you think bigger is better. Feel free to shape your horns before you cut to make sure they are long enough.

2. Give the horns their signature shape by molding each piece of wire into an "S" shape.

3. Take each piece of wire and gently wrap it in the crepe paper. Start with a thin point and work the crepe paper into thicker layers as you go down to the base of the horn. Continue wrapping crepe paper around the base until the horns are nice and thick.

4. Tightly wrap each piece of wire now covered in crepe paper in black duct tape. Layer over any areas with additional tape until you're happy with the results. It should look very smooth with no wrinkles.

5. Tape the bottom of the horn so that you have a flat surface to work with.

6. Carefully hot glue the bottom of each horn and set on the headband. Then, glue around the base of each horn to make sure they're securely attached. Cover up any traces of glue with more duct tape.

Scepter

To create the magical scepter owned and wielded by the evil Maleficent, all you will need are the following materials:

Materials

If you can find a long, straight walking stick in the beautiful outdoors, that's perfect, but if not, you can purchase one.

• Wooden walking stick
• Green light-up bouncy ball
• Clear plastic cup
• Twine
• Black shelf liner
• Black duct tape
• Black spray paint
• Glue gun
• Scissors

Instructions

1. Using the glue gun, place the plastic cup on top of the walking stick and glue it until it is sturdy as can be (open side of cup facing upwards).
2. Then, glue the green bouncy ball on top of the cup.
3. With the black shelf liner and scissors, cut out three large pieces resembling the shape of the petals of a lotus flower.
4. Glue these pieces around the cup so that it is fully covered and further secure the bottoms with duct tape.
5. Tie the twine in crisscross patterns from the bottom of the stick to the top, securing with duct tape when needed.
6. Last but not least, spray paint the whole stick and twine with black spray paint.
7. Be careful not to spray the bouncy ball because you will want it to glow green for a neat effect.

If you dare to go the extra mile, get a black raven, AKA Diavel, and glue him on the top of the ball or place him on your shoulder.

Shoes

Stylishly conquer this part of the dark costume by opting for any black shoes. If you're not so graceful in heels, choose black flats or combat boots. And if you're a qualified heel-walker and can stride in confidence, choose peep-toe platforms, pointy-toe pumps, or heeled boots.

Makeup
