If you want a rockin' look from the 1960s to the 1980s, look no further than a Tina Turner costume. Any of these styles is guaranteed to bring down the house.
A Basic Tina Turner Costume
Rock legend Tina Turner is still famous for her big voice, big hair and amazing legs. In her heyday from the 1970s through the early 1980s, she was utterly fearless in her song and fashion stylings.
So how do you achieve the look of this icon? First and foremost, you need the wig. If you have that, the rest barely matters. The wig that screams Tina is from her style in the 1980s (think What's Love Got to Do With It? and Private Dancer) but you can also wear it with a 1970s costume for a Proud Mary look. No matter what, you will be Tina.
This iconic wig can be bought at a number of costume stores. Try Vogue Wigs, which makes the spiky wig in black. If you want something that looks more exact, go to Wigs Unlimited, which carries a wig that looks very real (hence a slightly higher price, but worth it) and has highlights.
You might even have skill in designing a wig yourself, but this should be your first call of order for the look.
The Outfit
For the rest of a Tina Turner costume, it's easiest to stick to the 1980s. In fact, you may not need to buy a ready-made costume at all, you can probably make a costume via thrift shop or friends' closets. A very short skirt is key, perhaps with sequins, or black leather. In addition, you should wear fishnet stockings. No matter how great your legs are, there is nothing like a pair of fishnets to make them look that much more sexy and shapely.
You'll also want to wear the highest pair of heels you can manage. Red shoes are great, but don't knock yourself out, you're going for height and more leg enhancement, so whatever feels best is what counts.
Add a jagged sleeveless top, perhaps with a denim jacket, and you will be good to go.
Buying a Turner Costume
There aren't as many ready made Tina costumes in shops or online as you might like. This is another excuse to hit the thrift shops, because any outrageous sparkly 1970s dress combined with the wig will do.
But, there are a few choices. Go to Fantasy Festival, which has a Proud Mary costume. It is a gold mini-dress with an eyelash skirt and tiger-striped top - very 1970s. With this dress, you might want to wear platform heel boots, rather than shoes.
If you don't mind spending a little more money, you can go to the British site Joke and get a gold mini-dress with black tassel trim and a matching gold jacket.
Search for Used Costumes
There used to be ready-made Private Dancer and sequined Tina dresses that aren't being carried in major outlets anymore. However, you might be pleasantly surprised at what you can find on eBay. In addition to these, people will sell their used Tina wigs and the costume they pulled together for the night. Don't feel uneasy about wearing a used wig - it's common with costume rentals. You can have wigs professionally cleaned, but it's easier to simply use a wig cap over your own hair. These can be bought at any beauty supply shop.
You can also post a wanted ad on Craig's List or something similar. Many people still have denim skirts and jackets that they are looking to get rid of and will be glad to help your cause.
Rock on!
